This Standard contains requirements that facilitate the planning and installation of a structured cabling system in a commercial building environment. The structure for commercial building cabling is based on the generic cabling system structure specified in TIA-568-C.0. This Standard specifies performance and technical criteria for optical fiber cabling systems. Performance and technical criteria for balanced twisted-pair cabling systems are specified in TIA-568-C.2.

ANSI/TIA-568-C.1 “Commercial Building Telecommunications Cabling” was developed by the TIA TR-42.1 Telecommunications Cabling Systems Subcommittee and published in February, 2009.

Significant changes from the previous edition of this Standard include the addition of category 6A as a recognized media type, the recommendation to use 850nm laser-optimized 50/125 mm optical fiber if multimode optical fiber is specified for backbone cabling, the removal of Category 5, 150Ω STP, and 50Ω and 75Ω coaxial cabling from the list of recognized media, and the relocation of copper channel and permanent link requirements to TIA-568-C.2.  Other changes include the incorporation of the generic nomenclature found in TIA-568-C.0, the inclusion of telecommunications enclosures, the inclusion of centralized cabling in the main body of the document, and the removal of generic requirements, which have been moved to TIA-568-C.0.

ANSI/TIA-568-C.1-1 “Addendum 1, Pathways and Spaces” published in May, 2012 and expands the content of TIA-568-C.1 with additional requirements, exceptions, and allowances to TIA-569-C for the commercial building environment. This Addendum provides specifications for room sizes and coverage areas that are suitable for the commercial building space.

ANSI/TIA-568-C.1-2 “Addendum 2, General Updates” published in November, 2011 and expands the content of TIA-568-C.1 with enhanced descriptions for the entrance facility and the equipment room and updated references to newly published TIA Standards.
